My questionnaire results tabulated

I have tabulated the results of my questionnaire in the form of a pie chart as it gives a clear insight of the prefered colour of my magazine. Doing a questionnaire allowed me to get more of an understanding of what people wanted from my magazine therefore allowing me to create a better magazine that suited the targets audience needs.

I have also created a bar graph(below) that shows the type of  mood people wanted from the dance magazine, this allowed me to consider the type of language, tone and relationship I would have with the reader therefore helping me even more as finding out about each aspect of the magazine helped me to think about the overall magazine and putting it together to form a double page spread.

Psychographics

Psychographics

According to the psychographics theory the entire population can be divided into seven groups:

- The reformer: Value their own independent judgement, core need in life is for enlightenment.
- The mainstream: live in the world of the domestic and everyday life, their core need is for security.
-The explorer: They are driven by a need for discovery and new challenges.
-The suceeder: Possess self confidence and have a strong goal, their core need is for control.
- The resigned: They have constant unchanging values and enjoy acting in traditional roles, their aim is to survive.
The struggler: They live for today and make few plans for tomorrow, they seek escape.

In terms of my target audience, the group that they fit into is 'The struggler'. The reason for them being catorgorised as the struggler is the fact that they enjoy partying/clubbing and going out therefore that infers they live for the moment rather then thinking about tommorow and the effects of tommorow. Many of the target audience may be students attending university which means they have responsibilities such as meeting work deadlines but instead of staying at home and doing their work they go out and drink alcohol and go to clubs. They also enjoy physical sensation and seeking escape. Although they prodominantly fit into 'The struggler' they have some aspects of 'the explorer' due to the fact they like new experiences and seeking different things- this could fit into the fact they enjoy going out and experiencing new things rather then fitting into the same mundane routine, they like change and excitement in their life.

Mood board

I have created a mood board expressing who my target audience are, it gives an idea of the gender, age, style, hobbies/ target audience pleasures. For example it shows that my magazine is aimed at students from around 18-26 who enjoy clubbing and partying, going out and having fun ect.

Double page spread layout

I have created a layout for my double page spread, the real double page spread is going to follow this frame and be in an interview form with one main picture of the artist.

Cultural theory

Adomo's cultural theory claimed that magazines were purely for the use of escapism/ a form of diversion that you can read which will pass the time. However their are any other uses and gratifications that are now employed in magazines. Firstly, their is an opportunity to create personal relationships with one another for example when you read about a piece of news in a magazine '' New movie featuring Keira Knightly' This gives people something to talk about and therefore bond with each other through the articles in magazines. Another use of  magazines is personal identity- this means you can form a connection/ aspire to be like someone in a magazine whom you look up to as a role model or idol. For example if you look at a magazine with a picture of a really muscly fit man you may aspire to look like him depending on what type of person  you are and the target audience of the magazine. Further more you can get surviellance- news from magazines which comes in all different forms; celebrity gossip, articles, interviews ect which provides the reader with information in the subject they are looking for.

Cultivation Theory

The cultivation theory is the belief that the stereotype changes over time due to the media. In my case I am going to change the stereotypical views surrounding youth/young adults and binge drinking. In the papers a very common issue that appears is the issue surrounding young people and binge drinking, it claims that their are more cases then ever of people ending up in casualty/ even dying from the misuse of alcohol. My dance magazine is going to promote the fact that people want to go out in order to enjoy and celebrate the creation of dance and club music and shows people want to enjoy themselves listening to the music, not just for getting drunk.

Market Research Questionnaire

I have made a questionnaire in order to get some market research which will help me to create my magazine more effectively as I know what people look for in a Dance music magazine.

Layout design of contents page

I have worked on Indesign to create a contents page for my music magazine. Here you can see I have inserted frames ready to put my pictures in place once I have taken them. I have also put the page numbers in place of where the pictures will be so the reader can look directly for what page each picture refers to and what will be on that page. I have also put example text in place of where text is going to go in my magazine using typical features of a magazine. For example the big capital letters at the start of each column.

Analysis of music articles

Today in class we an analysed the language and language techniques used in several different articles from different music artists. We looked at a range of different artists so we could get a idea of the style and way in which different artists and genres use language. The article I looked at was called ''The tree of arrogance'' and was about a rock band called Chapel Club.  Firstly, opinions are used throughout the article. The effect of using opinions from the artist is that they bring us closer to the artist as it allows us to gain a deeper insight into their views, thoughts and feelings and we learn more about their personality which is good as the reader doesn't want to read a whole page on what a journalist/ interviewers perspective is we would like to know more about the band and their thoughts.

Secondly, adjectives appear very frequently in the article- this description allows us to know more about the action that is going on within the group and makes the article more exciting ''smoking shit loads of weed'' and ''I'd had the worse night throwing up'' This gives us more information about what the artist is doing.
Another technique used in the article is metaphors, this gives a bit of depth to the piece and allows it to be more creative and imaginitive rather then just a load of boring words ''A forest of insecurities'' '' Arrogrance and self assurane thats the one that bears the finest fruit'' This makes the article more entertaining to read it and also shows us a little more about the artist as it shows what type of personality they have. For example we can learn that the lead singer is a bit cocky and arrogent therefore meaning he wants sucsess and believes in himself.

Analysing and comparing magazine covers

In this task I compared two different music magazines- Top of the Pops and Mixmag. I analysed both magazines in terms of their uses and gratifications and the different music convention codes of the magazines. They were both very different magazines in terms of their target audience but they both fulfilled the need to provide readers with information aswell as giving them the chance to form personal relationships and personal identity.

Audience Segmentation

Media produces segment the audience and label them into 3 groups. These 3 groups help them to determine the demographic-mesurable data such as age, income and gender. Geodemographic- information about who you are based on where you live and psycographic- information about your attitudes and beliefs.. They are catorgarised using the following: The ACORN system, The NRS systtem and Social Value groups. These allow the media producers to create products best suited for each different type of social group and class. I am going to use the three systems to help figure out the target audience for my music magazine.

Masthead Research

I have researched several different Mastheads from different music magazines and commente upon the typogrpahy, colour shape and language.

Content Analysis

In class today we have been looking at different genres of magazine (Top of the pops, NME, Black beats ect) for each magazine we looked at the amount of advertisements in them and different types of advertisements for example: music albums, hair products ect. We also looked at the amount of space each ad took up- 1/4 page, 1/2 page or a full page. From looking at Black Beats magazine we came to the conclusion that the primary audience were young females within the age range of 14-18 as it has many pin up celebritys and posters that would appeal to a female audience this included people such as Lil romeo, Bow wow and other popular male singers.

For example on the front cover the main image is of Bow Wow, a popular male pin up. Therefore we can immediatly infer this magazine is for girls.

For example products such as 'Olive Oil root stimulator for afro caribbean hair and images of women with long healthy hair can be seen. Therefore we can infer a bit more about the target audience- aimed at a specific ethnic group- black/afro caribbean.

Another aspect of the magazine that showed us it was for teenage girls is the section on 'Prom queens' this gave information about prom and current styles and trends for proms.  In the same way the advertisements are promoting- hair growth and hair care (which would particulary intrest females) also a new book about two black females. Therefore Black beats magazine is very much about personal image and throughout the magazine beauty product advertisement can be seen which offers personal identity to the reader.

Top of the Pops magazine target audience is aimed at female, teenage girls. We can infer this from the main images on the front cover, they are all male and therefore are looking to get girls interested- The Wanted, Justin Bieber and JLS are all very popular celebrities therefore if girls see them on the cover they would instantly want to see more. The cover stories also suggest it is for a female audience as they cover issues/ deal with things that teenage female girls might relate to. Above I have provided a pie chart of the different types of adverts that feature in both magzines.

Magazine cover annotation

This is the cover of a monthly magazine called Sugar, it appears to be aimed at an audience of around 13-18 as the main feature of the magazine is about Emma Roberts who is an idol to many teenage girls as an actress, singer and fashion icon. It is also very obvious that the magazine is aimed at a female audience due to the fact the cover is predominately pink- a colour which represents females, the cover lines- ''your style season'' this suggests the primary audience is for girls who have an interest in fashion and keeping up with the latest trends and the other cover lines which cover issues that teenage girls might have such as boyfriends and body issues.

Evaluation of Blogs

To get a deeper insight into Blogging and the diffrent styles and types of blogs I did some research into previous blogs made by students and some existing blogs on the web promoting products such as shoe lines. The first blog I looked at was Blackstar-Riddemz made by a previous AS media student. I found her blog particularly effective as it had various different forms of media and ICT to keep people entertained this included things such as posted images of logos, playlists, different graphs and chaerts, slide shares and a border which represented the theme of the magazine. I would like to have aspects of her blog in my own such as the consitency of blog and the use of different media. Another students blog I looked at was Emily Mitchells although different to the previous blog I had looked at it was a good contrast as it was very simplistic but clear and good at getting information across. Her magazine also used lots of media techniques to keep the viewer engaged but also conveyed all the necessary information and you could see te amount of research and work that had been put into her magazine from the blog. I also looked at two professional blogs the first on being Lovemydress which is a blog that gives bridal inspiration and promotes dresses from different collections. The Blog uses several different media techniques which makes the blog more professional for example direct weblinks through clicking on images, drop down menu, a consistant theme and font which goes with the bridal style they are trying to promote. The downfall to this website is that there is little information probided and mostly picture based therefore it is harder to navigate through and find exactly what you are looking for. I also looked at Pete Frasers blog which is designed for students and teachers of A level media studies and provides them with information regarding the subject, new oppertunitys, mark schemes ect. The blog uses different media and ICT techniques such as slide share, Jpeg images, screen shots with added annotations and videos. This blog is compact with information along with the use of videos and images to break the page up and keep the reader engaged, this area of the blog is the area in which I want to encorperate into my own blog.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Rachel and I am currently studying AS Media at La swap. The purpose of this online blog is to evaluate the process and outcome of my production work of a music magazine and research surrounding the genre of music. Blogging has several purposes for this unit of work it is used as a form of electronic evaluation for my coursework- a music magazine which will consist front page, contents and double page spread. The magazine is to have a primary audience of teenagers between the age 16-19 in the UK. The magazine will be sold on a weekly basis. I will be making the following decisions for my magazine: a title, genre(s), house style and form, magazine conventions, brand identity and use of logo, representations and ideologies, the language of the magazine article, original images, primary and secondary audience. After browsing through some blogs on the internet made by previous students and blogs set up for business I discovered that blogging is a very effective way of promoting, updating and in this case evaluating things. Some of the best web logs I have seen include 'The Shoe Girl Blog' (mylifeinheels.com) I found this blog particularly good due to its variety of different media and ICT techniques e.g. web links through images, regularly updated images of her shoes, hyperlinks, mood boards. The blogger also keeps the viewer engaged with regular updates about her shoe lines and whats going on her own life, style gurus and her inspiration. This keeps the reader engaged as its not just constant text
